Pattern: Desert Dawn
Identifiers / Alternate Names: This category covers a number of different items that could have actually been classed as "solid colors". However, all of these items have a speckled look to the finish consisting of what looks like tiny spots or flecks of brown (on the yellow) or light red (on the pink) paint. From far away they look like solid colors with a bit of texture to the finish. Also known as: Speckle, Flecks, Desert.

We have seen these Pyrex Utility Dishes referred to in various ways, including “oblong baker” and “Lasagna pan”. I think there is some confusion among the sizing, but I think these are the true utility dishes and not the flatter baking pans. According to Mauzy’s Pyrex - The Unauthorized Collectors Guide (pg 154) they were first introduced around 1952 in Lime Green and Flamingo pink. I believe this Desert Dawn Utility Dish dates starting around 1955, because I’ve seen a 1955 advert for Desert Dawn featuring the dish and others that says “New - from the makers of Pyrex Ware”.
The dish is nearly 2 inches deep, 6 1/2 inches wide and 11 1/2 inches from handle end to handle end. It’s marked with the number 231 and instead of size measurements it has capacity - 1 1/2 quart. I think this is where it might differ from the lasagna pans which I believe have inch measurements on the bottom. None of these utility dishes came with lids, by the way.
The color is a lemony cream yellow that is speckled randomly with what looks like brown paint. The dots are tiny and are sprayed on pretty haphazardly in some places… there are occasionally tiny little clumps of raised brown. The dish has completely rounded handles unlike a few we’ve seen that have either “diagonally cut” handles or rectangular handles that jut out from the ends.
There is also another size of Oblong Utility Dish in the ad that we will be listing here because it is similar. That one had a slightly larger capacity at 2 quarts and was marked as #232. I think it’s around 13 by 8 inches and of similar depth.
We’ve also decided to start listing Desert Dawn pink and yellow items together on the same page to save space - these are the two colors that we know about from magazine ads. For the pink desert dawn items, the flecks are more reddish-pink in color. Others colors may exist, but we don’t have enough information on them.
