Lucky In Love Casserole - Pyrex Love

To say that the Lucky In Love pattern casserole has been one of the “holy grails” of Pyrex promotional collecting is an understatement. For many years - actually, since we started seriously collecting in the mid 2000s - there’s been some debate on whether this pattern actually “existed” as an actual promotional item.

It first came to light in the Rogove/Steinhauer book, listed as “1 qt Lucky in Love casserole (1959 promotion)”. At the time, we didn’t really think much of it - while it’s a cute pattern, it’s a rather simple looking one and it didn’t knock our socks off. It was only over the years, as we found and identified pattern after pattern from books and auction sites, that we began to wonder about this one.

At first, we thought it might be that it was a “one-off” pattern, or made as a special commemorative. After all, these items do exist. However, it was actually named in the book, had a year of production AND it was called a promotional - obviously meaning that it had been released as a general circulation item. Was it a mistake that it was photographed in the book? Some began to think it was an urban legend of sorts.

This mystery never really went away, though we didn’t think too much about it over the past 4 or 5 years. Then, suddenly one appeared on Ebay in mid 2012. It was unmistakably the Lucky in Love pattern - and it caused quite a stir in the collecting community. To our knowledge, none had ever been seen before - either online or in a collection. Any pictures online were scans from the example in the Rogove/Steinhauer book. While the mystery surrounding the piece has now been decreased, we still wonder just how many of these were made, and whether or not they truly were a regular release promotional. We can’t say for sure - but it seems certain now that others will be found. It’s just a question of how long it’ll be.

The casserole itself is a standard #473 1 quart, in plain white. The decoration pink hearts along with green four-leaf clovers and green grass below… hearts along with 4 leaf clovers = “lucky in love”.

Interestingly, the lid that came with the casserole that was on Ebay was not the standard clear glass one. It was opal white, and it seemed to be “indented” on the top. At first we thought the lid was photographed up-side down, and that there might be a pattern on it. This doesn’t seem to be the case, however. In addition, the one shown in the Rogove/Steinhauer book did not have a lid at all. So, it could be that this is a mismatch lid.

The bottom stamp on the casserole appears to be a standard one. We’re uncertain on whether or not this came with any sort of cradle or extra pieces. I guess we’ll have to wait and see - hopefully, the next one of these that turns up comes with the original box too!

Thank you to luvarknsas for permission to use the photos of the casserole.
