Pattern: Advertising / Specialty
Identifiers / Alternate Names: This category includes pyrex items that were customized for companies, produced for advertising purposes, or made for special events such as one time employee gatherings. While there might not be much distinction between this category and the "Promotional / Unknown" category, we felt that because of the large number of advertising items (mugs in particular) that they should be placed in their own category to avoid cluttering the already crowded promotional category. In most cases, these items are not sets but single items.

This advertising Pyrex mug was produced in fairly small quantities and was not a regular item being sold. We believe it to be some sort of a promotional piece, though we can’t be sure of it. It is somewhat similar to a number of other advertising mugs - in particular, there is another Labware mug which we actually own that has words in the same blue turquoise shade.
The front of the mug has the words “Pyrex Only From Corning” in all caps, while the reverse features the saying “At Home In Your Lab”. The bottom of the mug, is actually marked as Pyrex with the #1410 stamp and a capacity of 300ml. That’s interesting because the other labware mug mentioned above does not have the Pyrex stamp and is marked as Corning instead.
Because the mug is marked as metric, we have a feeling it was produced later. However, that hasn’t discouraged the prices on this mug. We actually are trying to figure out (if someone knows more, please contact us) why this mug in particular commands very high prices. We were wondering if it was because it was only given out to actual employees who worked in the Corning labs. It could also be the rarity - but we have seen other Pyrex labware mugs like the other one we have go for much cheaper prices. In some cases this mug has been seen for sale at over $100, though it usually seems to range from $10-30. It’s a pretty nice looking mug, though it seems less remarkable than some of the other ones out there.
Update 3/08: To my amazement, I saw that a photo of this mug with its original box and insert the other day on Ebay. The seller stated it was released in 1977 in conjunction with the Pyrex Corning Centennial. That’s not the amazing part - the amazing thing is the insert seems to point to the “Blue Butterfly Gold” Flask and Beaker being part of the same promotional! Very cool…
