Salt in Refrigerator Boxes

Thursday May 18, 2006

Although these small oven-refrigerator Pyrex sets are pretty common at flea markets, this yellow 1 1/2 cup box was one of the first pieces of Pyrex we ever bought so it brings back some memories. It was in pretty good shape and actually came with a lid (a lot of times you’ll see boxes without lids). Best of all it was only $6.

So, these glass refrigerator boxes are pretty cool for display, but as far as using it to store leftovers in the fridge it’s not so practical. But one of the best uses we’ve had for it is as sort of a kitchen counter “salt cellar”. We put kosher salt in it, and whenever we start cooking take the lid off and just grab pinches of salt as you go. Just like on TV, hehe. It doesn’t work so well with normal table salt because the grains are too fine.
